Position is very important in poker. By playing in the correct position you can obtain key information about your opponents. This information can be used to make cheap bluffs or to determine whether an opponent has a strong or weak hand.
A player’s position at the table is determined by the position of the person to his or her left, the dealer. The player in the first position has the privilege and obligation to place the first bet in each betting interval (as determined by the poker variant being played). Each subsequent player must either call the bet, put into the pot at least as many chips as the player before him, or raise the bet.
